LASG shuts 30 illegal medicines stores in Ajah, Lekki

LASG shuts 30 illegal medicines stores in Ajah, LekkiThe Lagos State Task Force on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, said on Sunday that it had sealed about 30 illegal patent medicine stores in the Ajah-Lekki area of the state.
free web site traffic and promotion A statement in Lagos by the Lagos State Ministry of Health said that the state government was worried about the dangers posed by illegal drug hawkers.
It quoted Dr Yewande Adesina, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Public Health, as saying that their nefarious activities needed to be urgently curtailed.
The statement alerted members of the public to the risks and dangers of purchasing drugs from hawkers.
``The shops were sealed for offences ranging from sales of drugs without license from the regulatory authorities, to failure to relocate from a market area/adherence to the mandated distance between a patent medicine shop and the market place, among others.
``The drug distribution system in Lagos will get worse if the activities of illegal drug operators are allowed to continue unchecked," the statement quoted Adesina as saying.
It also said that the Special Adviser said that the government would do all it can to stop the inherent dangers associated with the sale of drugs through unauthorised outlets.
The statement also assured the people that the state government was committed to streamlining the drug distribution system in the state to enhance public safety.
It cited the provision of the pharmaceutical laws which prescribed that pharmaceutical premises cannot be located in motor parks or an environment where commercial activities are, and are growing very closely together.
The statement noted that any pharmaceutical premises surrounded or covered completely by a growing market or standing close to it, shall relocate to another suitable location, two years after formal notification to do so.
It, therefore, advised all intending pharmacy operators and patent medicine vendors to liaise with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and the Directorate of Pharmaceutical Services, to get a permit.
The statement added that those interested in the importation, distribution and sales of drugs should get their premises licenced by the appropriate authorities.

Katy Perry Files $6.5 Million Countersuit Against UK Haircare Company

Katy Perry's hairy legal mess continues.
Despite U.K.-based beauty company Jemella Group Limited's effort to prevent the singer from taking legal action against them, the famous pop singer has filed a $6.5 million countersuit against Good Hair Day's parent company for not holding their end of the bargainKaty Perry
Jemella Group Limited originally filed a complaint in federal court in California a couple weeks ago, saying that in 2011, they agreed to pay Perry $4.5 million to appear in their ads and be a celebrity spokeswoman for the brand for two years, but the singer's camp said there was an oral agreement extending the contract for another two and a half years and another $6.5 million.
In her counterclaim filed in Federal Court on Monday and obtained by E! News, the "Wide Awake" singer claims that while Good Hair Day (ghd) says they have no current valid deal with her, the company "continues to use Perry's name and image on its website to promote is hair care products. ghd has failed to honor its contractual obligations to Perry, yet it continues to benefit from Perry by using her name and image without compensating her."
The legal documents add that the website still labels the pop singer as the company's "brand ambassador."

Twitter: 2 step sign-in

Twitter’s upcoming two-step sign-in system could prevent the next big hack
Twitter’s upcoming two-step sign-in system could prevent the next big hackWhen hackers compromised the Associated Press’s Twitter account yesterday, they showed just how much damage one can do with a few scary tweets.
Now, Twitter is finally making it harder for that to happen again. The company is working on a two-factor authentication system for Twitter accounts, which should, in theory, make it harder for hackers to break into them, as Wired reports.
Here’s how it works: Right now when you log into your Twitter account from a new computer or device, Twitter treats that device like any other you’ve used — you just log in and start using the service. With two-factor authentication, that process gets a bit more complicated: Soon, when you try to log in on a new device, Twitter will also send to your phone a random code, which must be entered on you new device before you’re able to use Twitter.
Basically, what two-factor authentication does is add a second layer of security: Hackers may get a hold of your password, but it won’t do them much good if they don’t also have your phone.
While two-factor authentication is new to Twitter, Facebook, Google, and, most recently, Microsoft all already offer it. It’s not perfect, but then again, no security measure really is.

Kanye West Boosts G.O.O.D. Rapper D'Banj's 'Scapegoat' With Two-Verse Remix

Kanye emerges / Photo by Getty ImagesKanye West has mostly been quiet since last year's G.O.O.D. Music album Cruel Summer, but he's been at work on something. At least part of it is for G.O.O.D. Music rapper D'Banj's "Scapegoat," a delightfully sunny song that nudges up against soca. D'Banj is a Nigerian pop star who is the breakout star of Africa's afrobeats scene, which bridges the gap between the sounds and rhythms of Afrobeat to the tempo of dance music. He broke out in Europe last year with the single "Oliver Twist" and appeared on the Cruel Summer track "The Morning," but has mostly been an overseas concern for Kanye's label. "Scapegoat" is a few years old, but has apparently been excavated for a major push worldwide, with West descending from the throne to add two new high-profile verses for a remix.
In his private pursuits, Kanye's reportedly flown various artists to Paris over the past few months, including new Chicago stars King L, Chief Keef, and Young Chop. He's also recorded a few new songs with Daft Punk (via Stereogum), which are apparently slated for his upcoming, allegedly God-making next album.

Fear Grips Nigeria Muslims After Threat

Fears have gripped Nigeria’s Muslims after threats by militants in the country’s oil-rich delta to attack mosques, religious leaders and hajj camps on claims of defending Christianity.
“MEND surely has the reputation and means to carry out the threatened terrorist attacks,” Disu Kamor, chief executive at the Muslim Public Affairs Center (MPAC), told OnIslam.net.
“Due to this fact, we call on the Nigerian government to take the threat seriously, to publicly condemn it and make tangible efforts to protect Muslims and their places of worship.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has threatened attacks against mosques, Muslim leaders and hajj camps “in defense of Christianity” against the militant Boko Haram.
The militant group said the attacks will start by May 31 unless the umbrella Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Catholic Church order a halt.”The militant group said the attacks will start by May 31 unless the umbrella Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Catholic Church order a halt.
"The bombings of mosques, hajj camps, Islamic institutions, large congregations in Islamic events and assassinations of clerics that propagate doctrines of hate will form the core mission of this crusade," MEND spokesman Jomo Gbomo has said in an e-mailed statement.
But the threat has sparked fears among Nigerian Muslims over possible attacks by the militant group.
Shakirat Abdulmajeed, spokesperson for The Criterion, an influential group of Muslim women professionals, said Muslims are genuinely apprehensive.
“The Muslim community has repeatedly denounced Boko Haram as not representing Islam and Muslims,” Abdulmajeed told OnIslam.net.
“It would therefore be most unfair for anyone to unleash violence on Muslims for what they know nothing about.”
Operating from oil-rich Niger Delta, MEND is one of Nigeria's foremost terror gangs that seeks to control the region's oil wealth.
The group, which operates in Nigeria's south - especially in oil-rich Niger Delta areas, including Lagos and Ondo, focuses its attacks on Nigerian security forces and facilities.
Boko Haram, a radical Muslim group, has escalated attacks against Nigerian security forces and churches in revenge to what it says injustice done to Muslims.
Muslims have repeatedly denounced Boko Haram attacks as running against the Islamic teachings.
“The Boko Haram violence does not discriminate between Muslims and Christians,” Abdulmajeed said.
“And since their activities are mainly in the Muslim North it is perhaps safe to say Muslims are worst hit in the mayhem.”
Serious Doubts
Muslim leaders, however, say the MEND threats do not represent the general sentiments of Christians in Nigeria.
MEND’s statements “fail to represent the sentiments of most Christians around the country” Kamor told OnIslam.net.
“(The statements) are reprehensible in their attempt to deny history of the most tragic occurrences which have claimed more Muslim lives, mischaracterized the name and message of Islam, and threatened to the very existence of the whole country.”
MEND threat has already invited condemnations from Christian bodies in Nigeria.
The Catholic Church has warned that MEND attacks could sink the country deeper into the precipice.
CAN has not yet commented on the threat, while security agencies have warned the militant group to desist.
Edwin Clark, a prominent leader from the Niger Delta, warned that the threat is aimed at causing “disaffection between the various groups in Nigeria”.
The Catholic Secretariat said any attacks on Muslims could further plunge the country to the edge.
“Any attacks on mosques and other religious places of worship will worsen the problem in the country,” Rev Father Ralph Madu, spokesman of the Catholic Secretariat, told OnIslam.net.
“So we urge MEND to drop their arms and machetes and embrace peace so that there will be a lasting peace in this country.
“All these provoked and unprovoked reactions won’t solve the problems.”
Prof Ishaq Akintola of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) said the timing of MEND’s threat raises serious doubts.
“The fact that MEND’s threat is coming just when lights start to appear at the end of the dark tunnel is quite interesting,” he told OnIslam.net, referring to reports about possible amnesty for Boko Haram militants to help bring peace to the country.
“It raises more questions than answers and it is in the interest of everybody that we end this.”
Nigeria, one of the world's most religiously committed nations, is divided between a Muslim north and a Christian south.
Muslims and Christians, who constitute 55 and 40 percent of Nigeria's 140 million population respectively, have lived in peace for the most part.
But ethnic and religious tensions have bubbled for years, fuelled by decades of resentment between indigenous groups, mostly Christian or animist, who are vying for control of fertile farmlands with migrants and settlers from the Hausa-speaking Muslim north.

Flooding Displaces Families In SA

One hundred and thirty six people were left homeless when their shacks were destroyed by floods in Kliptown, Soweto, Johannesburg emergency services said on Saturday.

The people were being moved to Khayalethu care centre in the area and supplied with blankets and food, spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said.

"We are facilitating the relief processes" he said.

The department of social development, housing, Gift of the Givers and South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) were also assisting.

Mulaudzi said the water levels were still high at 1.5m.

No one was injured and process of moving people to the hall started around 15:00.

Earlier on Saturday, several motorists and passengers were rescued after they were trapped in flooded roads in Soweto, emergency services said on Saturday.

"They were rescued at Klipspruit Valley and New Canada roads after their vehicles were trapped as a result of heavy rainfall. The roads remain closed," said City of Joburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

Four people from two sedans and a taxi were rescued at New Canada road, opposite New Canada train station.

The vehicles were trapped on the flooded road under a bridge in the morning.

Three other people were also rescued from two vehicles at Klipspruit Valley road in Nancefield.

156 dead, 5,500 injured in China earthquake

156 dead, 5,500 injured in China earthquakeBEIJING — A powerful earthquake struck the steep hills of China’s southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday, leaving at least 156 people dead and more than 5,500 injured, nearly five years after a devastating quake wreaked widespread damage across the region.
Saturday’s quake, while not as destructive as the one in 2008, toppled buildings, triggered landslides and disrupted phone and power connections in mountainous Lushan county. The village of Longmen was hit particularly hard, with authorities saying nearly all the buildings there had been destroyed in a frightening minute-long shaking by the quake.
“It was such a big quake that everyone was scared,” said a woman who answered the phone at a kindergarten hours later and declined to give her name. “We all fled for our lives.”
Rescuers turned the square outside the Lushan County Hospital into a triage centre, where medical personnel bandaged bleeding victims, according to footage on China Central Television. Rescuers dynamited boulders that had fallen across roads to reach Longmen and other damaged areas lying farther up the mountain valleys, state media reported.
The China Earthquake Administration said at least 156 people had died, including 96 in Lushan. In the jurisdiction of Ya’an, which administers Lushan, 19 people were reported missing and more than 5,500 people were injured, the administration said.
The quake — measured by the earthquake administration at magnitude-7.0 and by the U.S. Geological Survey at 6.6 — struck the steep hills of Lushan county shortly after 8 a.m., when many people were at home, sleeping or having breakfast. People in their underwear and wrapped in blankets ran into the streets of Ya’an and even the provincial capital of Chengdu, 115 kilometres (70 miles) east of Lushan, according to photos, video and accounts posted online.
The quake’s shallow depth, less than 13 kilometres (8 miles), likely magnified the impact.
Chengdu’s airport shut down for about an hour before reopening, though many flights were cancelled or delayed, and its railway station halted dozens of scheduled train rides Saturday, state media said.
Lushan reported the most deaths, but there was concern that casualties in neighbouring Baoxing county might have been under-reported because of inaccessibility after roads were blocked and power and phone services cut off.
As the region went into the first night after the quake, rain started to fall, slowing rescue work. Forecasts called for more rain in the next several days, and the China Meteorological Administration warned of possible landslides and other geological disasters.
Tens of thousands of people moved into tents or cars, unable to return home or too afraid to go back as aftershocks continued to jolt the region.
Lushan, where the quake struck, lies where the fertile Sichuan plain meets foothills that eventually rise to the Tibetan plateau and sits atop the Longmenshan fault. It was along that fault line that a devastating magnitude-7.9 quake struck on May 12, 2008, leaving more than 90,000 people dead or missing and presumed dead in one of the worst natural disasters to strike China in recent decades.
“It was just like May 12,” Liu Xi, a writer in Ya’an city, who was jolted awake by Saturday’s quake, said via a private message on his account on Sina Corporation’s Twitter-like Weibo service. “All the home decorations fell at once, and the old house cracked.”
The official Xinhua News Agency said the well-known Bifengxia panda preserve, which is near Lushan, was not affected by the quake. Dozens of pandas were moved to Bifengxia from another preserve, Wolong, after its habitat was wrecked by the 2008 quake.
As in most natural disasters, the government mobilized thousands of soldiers and others — 7,000 people by Saturday afternoon — sending excavators and other heavy machinery as well as tents, blankets and other emergency supplies. Two soldiers died after the vehicle that they and more than a dozen others were in slipped off the road and rolled down a cliff, state media reported.
Premier Li Keqiang flew to Ya’an to direct rescue efforts, and he and President Xi Jinping ordered officials and rescuers to make saving people the top priority, Xinhua said.
The Chinese Red Cross said it had deployed relief teams with supplies of food, water, medicine and rescue equipment to the disaster areas.
With roads blocked for several hours after the quake, the military surveyed the disaster area by air. Aerial photos released by the military and shown on state television showed individual houses in ruins in Lushan and outlying villages flattened into rubble. The roofs of some taller buildings appeared to have slipped off, exposing the floors beneath them.
A person whose posts to the micro-blogging account “Qingyi Riverside” on Weibo carried a locator geotag for Lushan said many buildings collapsed and that people could spot helicopters hovering above.
The earthquake administration said there had been at least 712 aftershocks, including two of magnitude-5.0 or higher.
“It’s too dangerous,” said a person with the Weibo account Chengduxinglin and with a Lushan geotag. “Even the aftershocks are scary.”
While rescuers and state media rushed to the disaster scene, China’s active social media users filled the information gap. They posted photos of people fleeing to streets for safety and of buildings flattened by the quake. They shared information on the availability of phone services, apparently through data services.

2Chainz To Visit Nigeria On D’banj’s Album Launch

D’banj earlier gave a hint about bringing 2chainz to Nigeria when he tweeted from his twitter account on April 1 saying: “So I said to someone, @2chains will be at my birthday party in June performing and the person said, April fool”.
It would be recalled that last year December, Idris Elba, Pusha T and Big Sean were all in Nigeria for D’banj’s koko concert. But this time around, some Nigerian singers including Fallyipupa, Kayswitch, Olamide and J-sol are all expected to perform at the event.

Smartwatches: Who Would Take The Crown , Apple, Samsung or Google?

It was indeed true when someone said that with every passing year, technology is getting smaller and cheaper. If it was smartphones and tablets that caught our fancy until last year, 2013 looks all set to take the trend from our palms and onto our wrists with the advent of smartwatches.
We’d first heard of Apple coming out with an iWatch, a wristwatch that could do everything that the iPhone could do, except in a smaller package. Not to be too left behind, then came the archrival Samsung announcing its ambitious project in the similar segment. In addition, we’ve been hearing rumors about LG and Google too busy working on their versions of the smartwatch. Oh, and did we mention that Microsoft too is making an Xbox watch?
Apple’s iWatch is expected to feature a curved glass surface with fingerprint scanning and possibly even Apple’s very own radio service. Maybe the iWatch could be among the first few of Apple’s devices to even come with NFC capabilities. And of course, there’s the health angle too – it can measure your pulse and keep a tab on the number of calories you burn when you workout.
Of course, we can’t say with certainty if any of the other smartwatches except those by Apple and Samsung could actually end up seeing the light of the day. They are indeed futuristic while just how useful these would be still remains to be seen.

Boston bombings: 2nd Suspect Caught

The second Boston Marathon bombing suspect is caught in a Watertown backyard, covered in blood.Police guard a Watertown, Mass., neighborhood near the end of a daylong manhunt
WATERTOWN, Mass. — A manhunt that locked down metropolitan Boston for 23 hours ended Friday night when police unleashed a barrage of gunfire and snatched the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings from his hiding place in a covered boat in a backyard.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was found huddled and covered in blood by officers who stormed the suburban neighborhood after receiving a tip from a homeowner. The suspect's brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, had died before dawn Friday in a fierce gun battle with police not far from the same section of Watertown.
Only a day earlier, pictures of the two men — wearing baseball caps and carrying backpacks that authorities said held bombs — had been spread across the country in an effort to identify them. Friday night, spectators broke out into applause as an ambulance with the younger brother made its way toward a hospital, and further celebrations broke out in central Boston.
"CAPTURED!!!" the Boston Police Department tweeted. "The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."
"The people of Boston will be able to sleep tonight," Mayor Thomas Menino said.
President Obama, who watched the arrests unfold on television from the White House residence, congratulated police and federal agents on the intense, four-day investigation that successfully sifted through countless tips and thousands of photos. He pledged that the federal government would not stop its work with the arrests.
"Obviously, there are still many unanswered questions," he said. "Among them, why did young men who grew up and studied here as part of our communities and our country resort to such violence? How did they plan and carry out these attacks? And did they receive help?"
Friday's events ended an intense dragnet underway since two closely timed bombs went off during Monday's marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170.
The climactic finale began shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday, authorities said, when the brothers shot a police officer to death at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, hijacked a sport utility vehicle, then opened fire on pursuing officers with gunshots, explosives and homemade hand grenades, leaving one officer critically wounded.
The furious gun battle — with 200 rounds of ammunition exchanged as residents of a Watertown neighborhood crouched in their homes — ended with the elder Tsarnaev dead and the younger, also apparently wounded, fleeing on foot.
In scenes rare to modern American law enforcement, city authorities shut down the entire Boston transit system, asked businesses to close, searched trains and urged people to stay home and lock their doors. The search rendered bustling Boston eerily empty — a scary snow day, some Bostonians described it.
"Hurricanes, natural disasters — a city shuts down. But nothing like this," said Steven Feldman, a lawyer who works in downtown Boston.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis concurred, pointing to the dizzying array of ammunition and explosives deployed by the two suspects. "This is the stuff that [for] an urban police department, it's almost unheard of," he said.
By nightfall, authorities had decided to lift the advisory to stay indoors, warning that it still might not be entirely safe. But "we cannot continue to lock down an entire city," said Col. Timothy Alben of the Massachusetts State Police.
Residents of a 20-block area of Watertown near the shootout began venturing outside, some to go to the store, some for a short walk.
Outside, one resident noticed something amiss about the small boat in his backyard. When he lifted a tarp covering it, he found a man covered in blood. He quickly retreated and called 911.
A dozen police cars screeched into the neighborhood, witnesses said, followed by hundreds of officers. An FBI hostage rescue team, guided by a helicopter overhead looking for heat signatures, cautiously approached the boat, fearful that the suspect might have more explosives. They used a robotic arm to lift the tarp, officials said.
Within minutes, a new barrage of gunfire and stun grenade volleys erupted.
"It was pow pow pow pow pow, at least 15, 30 shots," said neighbor Deanna Finn, who dragged her 8-year-old son onto the bathroom floor and threw herself on top of him. She kept flushing the toilet to drown out the noise of the volleys outside.
"It felt like my entire life, I swear. I never had anything go so fast and so slow at the same time," she said.

He is now the oldest man who has ever lived, of those whose ages have been officially verified. He takes the title from a man named Christian Mortensen of California, who died in 1998 at 115 years and 252 days old, Daily Mail reports.
"Mr Kimura, born on 19 April 1897, is believed to be the last known man to have lived across three centuries," writes BBC News. "[And,] He is one of only 12 people in the world still alive who was born before the turn of the 20th century," according to the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, in Tokyo.

Thanks to your generation's efforts, Japan could overcome several difficult times and achieve the prosperity we enjoy today. Your healthy existence becomes our confidence and pride," according to Reuters.
In addition, Mayor Yasushi Nakayama of Kyotango City, where Mr, Kimura lives in western Japan, came to visit for his birthday and to present him with messages from all over the world, according to Reuters.
Mr. Kimura worked as a postman to the age of 65 and then as a farmer until he was 90. He now lives at home and is under the care of his grandson's 60-year-old widow and he has 14 grandchildren as well as dozens of great and great-great grandchildren, reports told BBC.
"He lives a three-meal-a-day diet of rice, pumpkins and sweet potatoes, according to local media," Reuters reports.
Mr. Kimura attributes his impressively long life to having practiced daily "moderation," eating small meals, waking up early and exercising regularly, according to The Telegraph.
Mr Kimura has attributed his impressive longevity to having long practised "moderation" in his daily life, consuming small meals, rising early and exercising regularly.
Japan has a reputation for longevity having a population of over 50,000 people who are 100 or older in 2011 and now it boasts the world's oldest man as well as the world's oldest woman, Misao Okawa, who is 115 years old, according to Reuters.

Uncle urges Boston bombing suspect to turn self in

Uncle urges Boston bombing suspect to turn self inAn uncle of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects urged his nephew to turn himself in Friday, saying he had brought shame to the family and the entire Chechen ethnicity.

Ruslan Tsarni, 42, also told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that he was not completely shocked when he learned that the older brother was named as a suspect in Monday's deadly bombing.

"It's not a surprise about him," he said. "The younger one, that's something else."
The suspects were identified by law enforcement officials and family members as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, brothers who had lived in the region of Dagestan, which neighbors the region of Chechnya in southern Russia.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, a 26-year-old who was seen in surveillance footage released Thursday by the FBI in a black baseball cap, was killed overnight in a shootout with police, officials said.

His brother, a 19-year-old college student, escaped. He was seen wearing a white baseball cap in the images from the bombing near the marathon finish line. Three were killed and dozens wounded.

"Dzhokhar, if you are alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness from the victims, from the injured and from those who left," Tsarni told reporters outside his Maryland home.

The brothers had been in the U.S. for about a decade and lived near Boston. Tsarni said he had not seen them since he visited them in December 2005.

He said the older brother, Tamerlan, had become a devout Muslim about seven or eight years ago.

"When I was speaking to the older one, he started all this religious talk, 'Insh'allah' and all that, and I asked him, 'Where is all that coming from?'" said Tsarni, a corporate lawyer and executive.

Tsarni said his nephews had struggled to settle themselves in the U.S. and ended up "thereby just hating everyone."

Asked what he thought provoked the bombings, Tsarni said: "Being losers, hatred to those who were able to settle themselves. These are the only reasons I can imagine of. Anything else, anything else to do with religion, with Islam, it's a fraud, it's a fake."

He later said he was not calling his nephews losers. "I'm saying those who are able to make this atrocity are only losers."

Chechnya has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency. Tsarni, who described himself as Muslim, vehemently denied that Chechnya or Islam had anything to do with the attack.

Tsarni said his brother left the U.S. and he had not talked to him since 2009. He said they had a personal falling out but did not elaborate.

"If somebody radicalized them ... it's not my brother, who just moved back to Russia. Who spent his life bringing bread to that table, fixing cars."

Tsarni offered his condolences to the victims.

"We're sharing with them their grief. I'm ready just to meet with them. I'm ready just to bend in front of them, to kneel in front of them, seeking that forgiveness."

2 Russian brothers suspected for Boston bombings

Two Russians bothers, 26 year old Tamerlan and 19 year old Dzhokhar, a second-year medical student in the U.S, are suspected to be behind the Boston Marathon bombings. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police last night, Dzhokhar is being intensely pursued. Below is their story...

From Boston Associated Press
In May of 2011, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev (pictured above and below right), then a senior at a prestigious high school, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the city of Cambridge, Mass., to pursue higher education. Now, Tsarnaev is on the run, described as "armed and dangerous" and suspected of the Boston Marathon bombing.
Two brothers, one now dead, one alive and at large. After hours of only grainy images of two men in baseball caps to go on, a portrait gradually started emerging Friday of the men suspected in the attack.

Tsarnaev, 19, and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed during a violent night in Cambridge, had been living together on Norfolk Street in Cambridge. An uncle, Ruslan Tsarni of Montgomery Village, Md., told The Associated Press that the men lived together near Boston and have been in the United States for about a decade. They came from the Russian region near Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's page on the Russian social networking site Vkontakte says he attended Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, graduating in 2011, the year he won the scholarship, which was celebrated with a reception at City Hall, according to a news release issued at the time. Before moving to the United States, he attended School No. 1 in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim republic in Russia's North Caucasus that has become an epicenter of the Islamic insurgency that spilled over from Chechnya. On the site, he describes himself as speaking Chechen as well as English and Russian. His world view is described as "Islam" and he says his personal goal is "career and money."

Tsarnaev appeared in the video released by authorities on Thursday, identified as Suspect Number 2, striding down a sidewalk, unnoticed by spectators who were absorbed in the race. He followed Tamerlan by about 10 feet. He wore what appeared to be a gray hoodie under a dark jacket and pants, and a white baseball cap facing backward and pulled down haphazardly.

Tamerlan was stockier, in khaki pants, a light T-shirt, and a dark jacket. The brim of his baseball cap faced forward, and he may have been wearing sunglasses.

According to the website spotcrime.com, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic violence in July 2009, after assaulting his girlfriend.

He was an amateur boxer, listed as a competitor in a National Golden Gloves competition in 2009

Shakira Sued for $100 Million by Ex-Boyfriend

Shakira, Antonio de la Rua
Shakira's ex-boyfriend believes he deserves a big payout.
The pint-sized singer and Voice coach has been slapped with a $100 million lawsuit in California by Antonio de la Rua, who claims that he built the "Shakira brand" and was brains behind her hits, "Hips Don't Lie" and "Waka Waka," according to court documents.
De la Rua filed the lawsuit on April 12, after initially filing a $250 million lawsuit against the star in New York last November. Shakira filed a motion March 28 asking the court to dismiss that lawsuit because they do not have jurisdiction over her and because de La Rua has failed to state an actionable claim.
Shakira doesn't believe her ex-boyfriend is to thank for her success, and according to legal documents, the new mommy states that when she first met de la Rua at a concert in Argentina in 2000, she was "already a well-known and recognized artist with an established international career."
She does say that her former flame, who is the son of an Argentine president, was one of "numerous advisers," but it wasn't because of his vast knowledge of the business. In fact, the performer stated that "though he lacked experience or knowledge of the music industry," she decided, in 2005, at his request, she decided to involve him in some matters relating to the business because he "was unemployed."

Boston Marathon investigation: FBI has bombing suspect, authorities push back on arrest reports

Authorities have identified a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings and forcefully denied a flurry of news reports that an arrest had been made in the attack Wednesday afternoon.

The Associated Press and the Boston Globe reported a suspect had been arrested and was en route to the Moakley Federal Courthouse in South Boston. CNN also reported that a suspect was in custody, before backtracking from its earlier report and saying no suspect had been nabbed. The Boston Police Department and the US Attorney's office in Boston denied those reports on Wednesday afternoon, saying no arrest had been made.

The FBI issued a sternly worded rebuke to the press for reporting that a suspect was in custody.

"Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack," Special Agent Greg Comcowich said in the statement. "Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate." He added that the reports cause "unintended consequences," and that the media should verify their information through "official channels."Meanwhile, the Moakley Federal Courthouse was evacuated around 3 p.m. Wednesday after a bomb threat. Hundreds of reporters and court employees--some of whom had gathered out front to see if a suspect would be brought there--calmly evacuated the building and walked across the street. More than a dozen news vans with satellite uplinks lined the street adjacent to the courthouse while news helicopters hovered above.
About 90 minutes after the building was evacuated, a maintenance worker emerged from the courthouse waving a green flag signaling "all clear," and people were allowed back into the building.

A small plaza at the Brigham & Women's Hospital was also evacuated due to an abandoned vehicle in the area, a spokeswoman confirmed, but they've been given the all clear and were let back in the building.

Authorities combed through video footage to find an image of "a suspect carrying, and perhaps dropping, a black bag at the second bombing scene," The Boston Globe reported. CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reported that the video showed a man in a black jacket talking on his cell phone "placing a black bag at the second bomb site outside of the Forum restaurant on Boylston Street and then leaving the area before that explosion." Police used the time stamp on the video to scan all the calls made in the area to try to track him down, Orr reported.

The FBI was scheduled to hold a press conference Wednesday at 5 p.m., but announced it would be postponed until later Wednesday night due to the courthouse bomb threat. The breakthrough in the investigation came from analyzing department store surveillance video and video from a news station.

An FBI spokesman in Boston and a spokeswoman for Boston Mayor Tom Menino declined to comment on the reports to Yahoo News.

The twin bombs, which were detonated close to the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon, sent 176 people to the hospital and killed three. Eight-year-old Martin Richard, 29-year-old Krystle Campbell and 23-year-old Lingzi Lu were the three people killed. Several of the injured needed amputations.

Police have said the bombs were fashioned from debris-filled pressure cookers and stuffed in black bags. They were located about 100 yards apart.

Van Persie rescues Manchester United @ West Ham

The finale to Manchester United's season is not turning into the serene victory tour that they might once have hoped it was with a lead of 18 points, rather they are meeting pockets of resistance everywhere. The outcome still feels inevitable, though, and it could still be over by the end of the month.
Another two points dropped to Manchester City, winners at home to Wigan, means that the once-mighty United lead is now down to 13 points with the second-placed team having six games left. Yet having trailed West Ham twice at Upton Park in a game that finally ignited in the second half, this felt like a decent, if imperfect, result for the champions elect.
On another night, in another season, they would have come from 2-1 down, after Mohamed Diamé scored in the 55th minute, and won the game but there is not the necessity to do so this year with the nearest challenger so far behind them. If results go the way of Sir Alex Ferguson's team they could still win the title at the Emirates a week on Sunday, a chastening possibility for all those who will gather there to tell Robin van Persie exactly what they think of him.
Van Persie's equaliser earned a point for United, a goal that should have been ruled offside. The best performer on the pitch – or certainly the most effective – was Andy Carroll, a missile aimed at the heart of United's defence and David de Gea in particular. Carroll was reckless in charging the goalkeeper before half-time and he walked off the pitch at the end with Nemanja Vidic complaining about his use of the elbow.
Vidic may wish to examine his own record in that department before dishing out advice. His team, without the pressure they are accustomed to at this point of a title race, did enough with a first-half goal from Antonio Valencia to level Ricardo Vaz Te's opener.
If ever it felt that the Premier League season was petering out then it was the opening stages of the night when a fixture that has generated some animosity in the past felt like a dead rubber.
It took a no-holds-barred challenge from Carroll at the end of the half, charging directly at De Gea as Manchester United defended a corner to get Ferguson out of his seat and berating fourth official Andre Marriner. To De Gea's credit he stood his ground and kept his eye on the ball, like a vulnerable furry creature in the lights of a speeding juggernaut.
Until that point, the spark had been missing apart from when both teams broke through and scored. Carroll, watched by England manager Roy Hodgson, was a marauding, intimidating presence in the United half but he did not do half as much damage as Sam Allardyce might have hoped.
The West Ham centre-forward's shot brushed a post in the fifth minute after he worked space in the box, with Valencia in particular getting a foot out the way to make sure he did not foul Carroll. Turning on the edge of the area his left-foot shot just crept wide.
Ferguson picked Michael Carrick and Phil Jones in midfield and there was not a surfeit of creativity from that area of the pitch. As for West Ham they broke away to score a wonderfully worked goal in the 17th minute that unfolded quite unexpectedly. Wayne Rooney lost possession on the edge of the West Ham area and Diamé carried the ball forward before moving it out to Matt Jarvis on the left. His smart change of pace left Rio Ferdinand behind and the cross to the back post was headed down by Carroll. Vaz Te met it with a second header to finish the job.
It took United more than 10 minutes to respond. The architect of the equaliser was Shinji Kagawa who, given the ball by Van Persie, dribbled wonderfully past Winston Reid and cut it back for Valencia to score his first league goal of the season. Nevertheless, United by no means took grip of the game and when Carroll came in to charge De Gea, it was West Ham who were once again looking the more dangerous.
The campaign against De Gea, conducted exclusively by Carroll and Kevin Nolan, continued with an elbow into the goalkeeper's ribs soon after half-time from Carroll, earning him a booking. They looked pretty certain that they had located United's weakest point but, in De Gea's defence, he hung onto the ball on that occasion.
In that opening 15 minutes of the half, Carroll looked at his best. He hit a dipping volley just over the bar with the kind of aggression that characterises the best parts of his game.
The second West Ham goal, however, came from that intriguing midfield talent Diamé, who scores few goals but picks high-ranking opposition to score them against. His other two of the season have come against Arsenal and Chelsea and his third was a superb left footed shot from the right after turning away from Rooney to make space.
A very poor night for Rooney ended when Ferguson replaced him with Ryan Giggs with just less than 20 minutes left. A shot from Rooney had been cleared off the line from Gary O'Neil after Jussi Jaaskelainen let it slip through. Otherwise he had seen little of the meaningful action.
The West Ham goalkeeper saved well from Van Persie's header on 68 minutes and he was unlucky with the second equaliser. Kagawa's shot from the edge of the area brushed James Collins and hit both posts. Van Persie, in an offside position when the ball was struck, tidied up neatly and the away side were level. In the end, a point was all the leaders deserved.
Man of the match Carroll.
Match rating 7/10.
Referee L Probert (South Gloucestershire).
Attendance 36,692.
Manchester United require just six points from their remaining five games to claim a 20th top-flight crown. Victory over Aston Villa on Monday will be enough if City lose at Spurs the previous afternoon, otherwise Sir Alex Ferguson's side could reclaim the crown with a win at Arsenal on Sunday week.

Rihanna Not Pregnant in Spite of Speculation

Rihanna
Could Rihanna's next big production be of the baby-bump variety?
The Barbadian songbird sparked rampant rumors that she's pregnant after she was spotted leaving a doctor's office in Beverly Hills on Tuesday.
Further fanning the speculation was the fact that the 25-year-old singer canceled her Houston concert earlier this week due to an unspecified illness—a move that celebuspawn conspiracy theorists took to mean that she could possibly be dialing things down in the case of a baby on the way.
Apparently so. Multiple sources close to Rihanna confirms  that the singer is not pregnant.
So there you go.
However, didn't keep fans guessing about the current state of her love life: Last week she was spotted with on-and-off (and, it seems, on-again) boyfriend Chris Brown. Surprise.

Aliko Dangote 'plans Nigeria refinery'

Total Nigeria oil and gas refinery at Amenam in the Niger delta (file pic) Nigeria is Africa's main oil producer but has to import more than 75% of its fuel

Africa's wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, says he aims to invest up to $8bn in a major new oil refinery that would almost double Nigeria's oil output.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer but lacks refining capacity and has to import most of its fuel.

Mr Dangote, 56, told Reuters news agency that those who should have invested in refineries were benefiting from Nigeria's lack of capacity.

Building a major refinery would help all of sub-Saharan Africa, he said.

The tycoon, who made his fortune in cement, flour and sugar, is worth an estimated $16bn (£10bn; 12bn euros) and has topped the Forbes list of Africa's richest men for the past three years.

Work on constructing the refinery would begin this year and it would eventually have the capacity to produce 450,000 barrels per day, he said.

He stressed that a new refinery was vital for Nigeria: "It has to be done."

"In five years, when our population is over 200 million, we won't have the infrastructure to receive the amount of fuel we use."

The BBC's Will Ross in Lagos says it is a scandal that Nigeria has to import more than three-quarters of its fuel despite being the continent's biggest producer.

Although it has two refineries in the Port Harcourt area, neither runs at full capacity.

Previous efforts to repair Nigeria's dilapidated refineries and build new ones have been scuppered to protect the interests of powerful fuel importers, some of whom have been linked to a subsidy scam costing the country billions of dollars a year, our correspondent adds.

map

Fuel in Nigeria is sold at a subsidised price. A government attempt to remove the subsidy in 2012 led to nationwide protests. The plan was subsequently dropped.

Last year an investigation revealed that in two years, over $6bn was lost in a fuel subsidy scam.

The inquiry into the subsidy scam was then set up but the legislator leading it was later arrested over bribery allegations.

Mr Dangote acknowledged in his interview that his refinery plan may face opposition.

"The people who were supposed to invest in refineries, who understand the market, are benefiting from there being no refineries because of the fuel import business," he said.
